Ransomware Gangs are Now Cold-Calling Victims
According to ZDNet, a new ransomware trend has emerged and is being utilized by gangs such as Sekhmet, Maze, Conti, and Ryuk. This tactic has been in action since August and is used to place additional pressure on ransomware attack victims in an effort to get them to pay the ransom.
These ransomware gangs will have an outsourced call center cold-call their victims with a template or script that is written to influence the victim to pay. According to calls obtained by ZDNet, the callers will mention that they are aware of third-party IT vendors working on their network, and that if they want to be able to recover their data, they need to discuss the situation with the attackers.
The ZDNet.com article below contains more information regarding this new tactic, in addition to a redacted transcript of one of these cold-calls.
